I’ve never been able to fully trust anyone since. Of course, it didn’t help that he left me for my so-called “best friend.” That meant that I lost my husband and both of my best friends (him and her) at the same time. I’m just sorry that I had to learn the hard way. My grandmother had a big problem with the two of them spending time hanging out together with our son and her son (who was fathered by another married man) while I was getting blisters scooping cold cookie dough in a bakery/deli all day. By the time I asked him to stop, it was too late. Grandmothers always seem to be right. If only they didn’t have to preface every piece of advice with the annoying and nullifying “In my day…” it would be a lot easier to take! I may miss almost everything else about my grandmother, but I don’t miss that “In my day…” stuff even a little.

Sorry, for responding so late here. I never thought I would marry again – unless it was to my six burner stove. You know, I think divorce is crippling. I don’t really understand how Hollywood stars so easily go in and out of marriages. It doesn’t even matter if it’s the ‘right’ think to do, it just hurts both parties and takes so much time to heal from – if at all. BUT, I am so HAPPY that you are WELL and that your son is not an orphan!!!! 😉

As a divorcee I heartily give you a HUGE pat on the back for taking that tremendous leap of faith. I’ve been divorced 25 years now and I’m still not interested in doing that again. Perhaps it’s just that I was so very, horribly awful at it? I don’t know. I thought I was doing everything right. Even when he had to be at work at 5:30 in the morning I got up at 3:30 and made him a hot breakfast and packed him a lunch that would have served four normal people every day. But, whatever.

We were very different sorts of people and we were not destined to be. He is a driller and dynamite blaster. He may have actually blasted the aging caves at the Coppola winery, but he would NEVER in a million years drop a few hundred dollars on dinner at a winery.

That’s what happens when one marries too young to fully know who one really is. But, on the other hand, I wouldn’t have gotten the best kid on earth if I had waited. Unfortunately, I had a very small window of fertility. Apparently, my uneventful pregnancy with him (not counting the cesarean and the discovery of a malignant tumor which the surgeon accidentally removed all of– by three CELLS!) was a fluke. A little over a year later I had a second trimester miscarriage and a few years after that a tubal pregnancy. I gave up after that life-threatening incident. I wasn’t keen on turning the son (who saved my life) into a virtual orphan.

P.S. I have the oven preheating to make Dutch Babies right now. 😉

Due to…life…, I stopped reading blogs just after you’d moved to SF – you hadn’t even found a job yet, I think. I’d been reading about your adventures in Paris for about a year. And now, for the first time since then, I find you back in Paris, albeit for a -surprise- honeymoon! Congratulations!

It’s one of 3 blogs that I actually subscribe to! I love your photos and your paintings and your sense of humor. I’ve been a subscriber to your blog for five years now and counting… bisous xoxoxo

Kari – What!?!!? You directed Hairspray and you didn’t invite me?!?! Hmmmmm. Okay, well, the next one I expect some tickets or at least an evite! So proud of you! What a fun show!

Aodh – Sadly Citizen Cake closed when Elizabeth Falkner declared bankrupcy and shut down both Orson and the recently opened version of CItizen Cake 3.0. It will be misssed. However, like a phoenix, something beautiful will arise from the ashes…

Carole – Ha! Thanks for noticing!!! And I thought I was being so secretive!.

It’s looking (as I back read through your blogs) like you’re working in Citizen Cake in Pacific heights now. I used to live in SF and will send all my old mates to you for nourishment.
All you need to do now is open up a Citzen Cake in Dublin and I’ll be set. SF, Paris and Dublin – my 3 favourite cities in the world, New York being my fourth favourite ! thanks again for the fantastic tips

I didn’t spend junior year abroad in college because I spent waaaaay too much on my out of state private arts school tuition… but believe me, there are dreams and plans in the works. I’m not particularly singing and dancing myself, but I am running the performing arts program at the Charles Armstrong School in Belmont. I just finished directing and choreographing Hairspray and will be teaching 4th grade summer school in a few weeks. 🙂

I have photos of that same pastry you photographed at Angelina’s! Funny! I’m back in SF cooking away. But I hope to be back in Paris soon. I rented a super cute little apartment in the Marais through Airbnb that was VERY afforable on rue Charlot (right next to that great bakery and just down the street from Cafe Breizh and great everyday farmer’s market). Want the link?!? Also, my good friend rents a beautiful apartment in the Marais but it is a little pricey – totally worth the splurge – super location right off place de Voge. I’ll send that too if you want? Still working on that book you helped out with so long ago…

The macarons at McCafe are made by Holder/Laduree’s industrial brand, Chateau Blanc
They made the same for Starbucks a couple of Xmas’ ago.

Wow, you just really asked a tough question, but luckily for you I have many answers. And, I should note that http://www.parisbymouth.com has great restaurant reviews that I live by. I love:

Les Papille: Around St. Germain area. Food served family style, awesome wine, great vibe. Great value. So so so so cool. You must go and make a reservation.

Septime: make a reservation way in advance. Great value tasting menu in upcoming super trendy/avant garde cool spot.

Breizh Cafe: best crepes. I mean – totally awesome crepes like you’ve never had before with a bowl of cidre to go along. Make a reservation! Very popular.. in the Marais.

Restaurant Spring: Outstanding tasting menu at great value by Daniel Rose (Americain). Good luck with reservation but if you can get one take it!

Kari – What!?!?! You’ve never been to Europe?!?! That is what your junior year abroad was supposed to be for lol! I hope you are well and, if this is the Kari that I used to teach a long long time ago, then I hope you are dancing and singing and thoroughly enjoying and sharing your talent!

The last few weeks of school are winding down into Summer and with my classes out on field trips – I was so excited to have time to sit down and read this post!! Having never been to Europe, your writing is like a fast-paced whirlwind taste of places I long to go to. Congratulations and best wishes to you and your new husband… I can’t wait for the next installment.

P.S. I’ve always wondered how accurate that Pixar film was… would love to hear more thoughts from you on that!

I just discovered this blog and it’s great to hear someone tell their story of their adventures in Paris, it brings to mind a few of my own.

Any way great blog and I’m off to Verjus very soon. incidently where is the best reasonable restaurant in Paris ? a tough one I know. rgds Aodh

Debbie – Wow! Thanks for the nice comment!!! You just made my day!

Kent – I hear that Laduree has a shop in Vegas too if you ever find yourself in Sin City. Funny enough, and I truly hate admitting this, but some of the best macarons I had this time around were at McDonalds. I know. I know. But, it’s true. In fact the worst ones I had were from a well known patisserie (that shall go nameless – but not Laduree who in my opinion makes the best along with Pierre Hermé). I know you’re next question is: what exactly was I doing in a McDonald’s in Paris but I’ll get to that in another story 😉

And great fun to hear about your travels back to Europe. I hope there’s more coming. I think we all wish that we could be in Paris each year (or quarter) for an extended stay so its nice to experience it vicariously when we’re stateside. Just glad Laduree’s boutique in NYC was so successful that they are now opening a full patisserie downtown. Can’t wait! Keep the stories coming, Ms. Glaze. Us native San Franciscans/Francophiles leaving on the east coast love your blog.

Cheers,

The weather was miserable and I never did find any of those food trucks you were talking about starting up years and years ago – so maybe there’s room for more? I would love to meet you there. After summer perhaps? A trip to the Sud de France is also in order. Check out Borme les Mimossa…. I gotta plan….

I didn’t go by Guy Savoy this time but opted to check out new places. The ex-pat ones were great but I could be biased because I know how hard it is. The street food was poppin as ususal

Much love,
Ms. Glaze
