I’m an English-speaker working in Spain and in the ´heat´ of the moment during service my Spanish comprehension fails at times; usually when the chef is yelling across the kitchen for something needed tremendously urgently. At which point my call-backs seem to be only _more_ irritating to him.
One time he just muttered something very Spanish, not fit for your blog, and rushed over to get it himself. Most embarrasing. But hey, only once (I say to myself) so far. Otherwise we muddle through.
But you will survive, for sure; you seem the surviving type. And conclusive comprehension will come with Endless Repetition – – at least, that’s what I’m hoping for in my case.

You might want to check out a consultant to get your visa. It’s ridiculous, but the paperwork can practically be a full job (especially the first time). Get an expert to do it, and their familiar name on your dossier can help push things through.

In terms of getting a work visa– find out if the restaurant can help, and/or talk to the Cordon Bleu– I’m sure they’ve seen other non-EU citizens in similar positions.
Basically to get a work permit here you have to have someone want to hire you bad enough to wade through all the red tape.
And thanks, I didn’t know there was a difference between sweating and perspiring!
